My name is Allison, and I am a teaching volunteer with Students For Research. I am reaching out because our class found your website very useful while researching STEM resources that can help students discover the various aspects of science, technology, engineering and math. Many of our current students are interested in learning more about how topics associated with STEM work, especially in relation to online research, either for school or for their future careers. Your website ended up being featured by our students, so we wanted to notify you and say thank you!

As a part of the assignment, one of our students, Becky, did some research on her own time and found this informative page for more STEM using this resource. The team found it helpful as it provided guidance on how libraries can introduce children to STEM and continue to provide resources as they progress through their education. 

I was hoping you would be able to include this resource on your website, even if it's only for a short time. KNOXVILLE What do environmental, social and economic sustainability have in common?

There are numerous ways to answer that question, but for those who pay close attention to education or economics it’s an accepted fact that the future belongs to societies that invest heavily in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). 

That’s why educators at all levels are pushing students towards those subjects at every opportunity, as was evidenced Jan. 21 at Big Orange STEM Saturday (BOSS) at the University of Tennessee.

About 150 high school students picked from communities across East Tennessee spent much of their Saturday at John C. Hodges Library, getting a first-hand taste of what awaits them should they choose to pursue careers in STEM through the UT system.

The officials in charge of the annual event ensured the visitors got to check out everything from the latest in robotics and virtual reality to an all-they-could eat meal at one of the campus cafeterias. They were also not afraid to milk pop culture for all it was worth to help spark their charges’ interests.

“This year’s theme is ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’,” said Laura Knight, an assistant professor of practice in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and co-chairperson of the event. “We are, as STEM people, the guardians of our future. We have the obligation and the ability to make things better in the future in so many different ways.”

Sustainability was the key concept that ran through Saturday’s conference, Knight explained.

“We try to make sustainability a part of everything we do,” she explained. “It’s not just about how we can recycle.”

The keynote speakers, in fact, were the members of a student organization comprised primarily of undergraduates who will be competing this year at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center against similar teams from across the country.

The group, dubbed The Tennessee Lunabotics, explained they  must come up with a robotic mission to the Moon and then effectively build it from scratch.

“We are meant to send a rover into a simulated lunar environment and it’s meant to mine gravel that exists beneath the surface of the moon,” explained Michael Fox, a major in aerospace engineering who was instrumental in putting together the team in 2021.

“This gravel has a bunch of materials that we’d like to have when we return to the moon later on this decade as part of the Artemis program,” Fox said. “There’s ice, potentially metals or helium. Once they’ve been collected they would be refined and transformed into materials we need like drinking water, construction materials, and rocket fuel.”

Makayla McKinney, who is studying computer engineering and German, explained how the Lunabots differ from other student groups.

“Even though we are a UT organization and a student organization, we function more like a startup,” she said. “We fundraise for ourselves, we design for ourselves …. At a lot of schools it’s a senior design project, but for us it’s a fun hobby.”

To many people, of course, the term “sustainability” generally refers to problems that are more down-to-Earth than lunar missions.

Although the Lunabots were the keynote speakers, most of the exhibitions and activities were concerned with showing how STEM can be used to give practical solutions to environmental and societal threats.

A pair of biologists from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, for instance, manned a table covered with flora and fauna in addition to a microscope that let the curious examine a sample of the infamous hemlock woolly adelgid, which has been killing trees in Great Smoky Mountains National Park since they were first discovered there in 2002.

Katy Kilbourne, plant pathologist, described how the state works with firewood producers to protect Tennessee’s ecosystems.

“Since 2021, we actually have a firewood quarantine that requires that all firewood imported into the state has to be heat treated,” Kilbourne said. “Firewood is actually an important vector for both insects and diseases.”

Also on hand were representatives from the One Health Initiative, a movement that seeks to bring together scientific authorities from a wide range of disciplines to tackle biological threats.

“It’s an approach to science that considers the health of humans, plants, animals, and the environment and how they’re connected to one another,” said Kimberlyn Roosa, a postdoctoral researcher in public health who specializes in infectious disease modeling. 

Roosa’s partner at the event, One Health administrative specialist Alyssa Merka, used the plight of leatherback sea turtles to demonstrate how the movement aims to solve problems. 

“Most leatherback sea turtles are being born female because of rising ocean temperatures,” Merka said. “Also, the stress and pollutants have caused a great many mutations. How do you remedy that? You need people from different backgrounds taking a holistic approach to develop solutions.”

BOSS, which is in its 12th year, was the brainchild of Thura Mack, who co-chairs the event and is also the Coordinator for Community Learning Services and Diversity Services for University Libraries.

To Mack, BOSS is an ideal way to put UT’s immense library system at the forefront of academic recruitment efforts.

“I wanted our students to see our library in a different way, as an educational hub for the university and for our community,” Mack said. “I wanted the students to not only see it but to be part of it … to help them get a sense of how incredible university life could be. I want them to imagine themselves doing STEM and art, and I wanted us to be a key player in introducing our students and making them feel welcome in our spaces.”

    Earth Day activities have cooled in Knoxville over the decades. The planet has not.

    KNOXVILLE — It’s been 52 years since the modern environmental movement was born on what is now known around the world as Earth Day.

    Now reckoned to be the world’s largest secular observance, Earth Day is the climax of Earth Week (April 16 to 22), which brings together an estimated billion people around the globe working to change human behavior and push for pro-environment economic and legislative action. This year’s theme is “Invest in the planet.”

    Events marking Earth Day in Knoxville tend to vary in size and tone from year-to-year, with 2023 providing environmentally minded residents with a number of ways to celebrate Mother Earth. 

    Perhaps the most memorable of those years was the very first one, when one of the most important voices in the burgeoning environmental movement spoke on the University of Tennessee campus.

    Jane Jacobs, who is now recognized as “the godmother of the New Urbanism movement,” gave a lecture to a crowd of nearly 200 people on the topic of “Man and His Environment” at the Alumni Memorial Hall, according to Jack Neely, who heads the Knoxville History Project.

    How to use free satellite data to monitor natural disasters and environmental changes

    KNOXVILLE — If you want to track changes in the Amazon rainforest, see the full expanse of a hurricane or figure out where people need help after a disaster, it’s much easier to do with the view from a satellite orbiting a few hundred miles above Earth.

    Traditionally, access to satellite data has been limited to researchers and professionals with expertise in remote sensing and image processing. However, the increasing availability of open-access data from government satellites such as Landsat and Sentinel, and free cloud-computing resources such as Amazon Web ServicesGoogle Earth Engine and Microsoft Planetary Computer, have made it possible for just about anyone to gain insight into environmental changes underway.

  • Knox County mayor honors women leaders in STEAM all month
     

    KNOXVILLE — Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs is observing Women’s History Month throughout March by sharing videos each Wednesday highlighting time spent in different Knox County Schools’ Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) classrooms taught by female teachers.

    The March 15 video features a visit with South Doyle High School STEM/Computer Science and 2022 KCS Secondary Teacher of the Year Katie DeVinney who was teaching a class on the principles of advanced manufacturing and practical design. 

    “I hope out of courses like this, that young women are able to see the opportunities available in sectors of the economy like advanced manufacturing and hopefully pursue those,” Jacobs said in a press release.

    DeVinney is a 10-year educator who began her career as a foreign language instructor but was inspired by her husband who started the Robotics program at South Doyle High School, to switch paths. 

    “I just love it. It’s so much fun to see the excitement in kids when they get to take something that they designed on this computer and then hold it in the real world. It’s the coolest process I have ever seen so that’s kind of why I do it.” DeVinney said. 

    Mayor Jacobs said celebrating women in STEAM is important for young girls because it shows them that women can succeed in technical fields — industry typically driven by men.

    The mayor has already shared his visit with Hardin Valley Elementary STEM Educators Jessica Everitt and Jana Yra and his visit with West Valley Middle science teacher Bethany Saunders.

    Later this month, he will share visits with Gibbs Middle School Art Teacher Dorothy Verbick and STEM Teacher Lauren Downs; as well as Karns Middle School Math Teacher Rebecca Layton.

    Knoxville celebrates sustainable technology startups from across the country

    KNOXVILLE — Leaders of start-up green businesses specializing in services and products ranging from carbon reduction to cleaning products and piping wrapped up some warp-speed lessons Aug. 31.

    At the conclusion of the three-month Spark CleanTech Accelerator the leaders of environmentally sustainable businesses from across the country took home some awards and got a strategic pep talk from Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon.

    “I’m very committed to all things green and sustainable,” she said. “Orange and green are complementary colors." She spoke of making Knoxville a “clean tech hub,” not just for Tennessee but internationally. She envisioned “a cleaner Knoxville and a cleaner world.”

    Targeted collaborative conservation will help local agricultural operations improve soil and water quality and protect aquatic life

    CHATTANOOGA Tennessee is as much a patchwork quilt of farms as it is an intricately woven lacework of streams and rivers. Soon, farmers and the aquatic life living alongside them will reap the benefits of $10 million in federal funds to support water-friendly agricultural improvements in the rolling uplands of the state’s southeastern corner.

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved the allocation of more than $197 million to support Regional Conservation Partnership Programs (RCPP) throughout the nation. These initiatives promote coordination between USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and partnering organizations that are already engaged in conservation efforts.

    Everybody has a story about the natural environment. Look around, and into yourself.

    University of Tennessee journalism professor Mark Littmann asks students in his environmental writing class every semester to write short sketches about environmental issues they may observe during any given day. Such an assignment requires an almost poetical approach. Here's a sampling from spring semester.

    A reef of bones

    Huge schools of rainbow-colored fish weave through the brightly colored corals as Sir David Attenborough describes a day in the life of a fish on the television screen. A little girl is mesmerized; this is no Disney fantasy but real life. The nature shows on Animal Planet capture her imagination and soon mornings and afternoons are spent watching big cats and meerkats navigate the wild spaces they call home. She finds an instant favorite in the book “The Rainbow Fish” and celebrates turning four with a sparkly rainbow fish cake, hand decorated with sprees for rainbow scales. She insists someday she will swim among the fish in their magical undersea world.

    WBIR: UT got good bones

    KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee boasts an incredible collection of animal skeletons — from hummingbirds to bison, according to a story from WBIR. It’s among the largest such assemblages in the country. (There are also skeletons at the Body Farm, but that’s a different story).

    The skeletons are part of the UT Anthropology Department’s Vertebrate Osteology Collection.

    “We have over 12,000 vertebrate specimens in our collections. So that’s 12,000 skeletons of individual animals,” Dr. Anneke Janzen, an assistant professor in UT’s Anthropology Department, told WBIR.

    First campus arborist continues climb up Utree Knoxville

    KNOXVILLE — Students at the University of Tennessee walk by hundreds of trees every day without thinking about them.

    Sam Adams was thinking about them even before he became UT’s first arborist.

    Adams, 58, has cared for trees in the field of arboriculture for decades. He’s worked privately and publicly, including as arborist supervisor for Sarasota County, Florida. He graduated with a degree in environmental studies at Warren Wilson College in North Carolina, where he initially pursued a degree in English.

    On the happy herping trail: Bryce Wade searches for salamanders

    KNOXVILLE — Bryce Wade scours the nature trail, turning over rocks and logs. On this overcast day at Ijams Nature Center, he searches beneath the leaves on the ground for one creature: salamanders.

    Underneath the rocks, logs and leaves, salamanders populate the cool, moist earth, avoiding the sun whenever they can. Wade is looking for a particular type: a winter species informally called the Southern zigzag salamander (Plethodon ventralis).

    UT students, professors and staff scrub up for ‘creek kidney transplant’ in Knoxville

    Imagine you’re a kid again. It’s a Saturday afternoon in July and after a morning full of rain the clouds begin to clear and the sun peeks out.

    You run outside in your rubber rain boots to meet your friends down by the creek in your neighborhood, carrying a large bucket, boots squeaking as you go.

    Once there, you and your friends carefully wade down into the water, curious to see what creatures lurk beneath the surface.
